WeWork supports protections for freelancers

The WeWork community has always included some of New York’s most talented and creative freelancers – wedding photographers, accountants, graphic designers, database administrators, they all call WeWork New York home. Building a successful business is alway challenging, and too many of our own members tell stories of clients not paying on time or at all and not having a clear avenue of redress when that happens. As many as seven out of 10 freelancers in New York City struggle to get paid for work completed and lose an average of $6,000 annually in unpaid invoices.

Today WeWork is very proud to support the Freelance Isn’t Free Act before the New York City Council. The Act would protect freelance workers against client nonpayment and abusive business practices, and give them clear paths to remedy with the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs. We stand in support of this legislation on behalf of the thousands of WeWork members who freelance in New York City, and do so with our partners at the Freelancers Union and SEIU 32BJ, and with community leaders like the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and New York Tech Meetup.

At WeWork we believe that we are always better together. We encourage the City Council to act on and pass the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, and to support and protect the thousands of freelancers in the WeWork community across New York. WeWork members can add their individual support by signing the petition at FreelanceIsntFree.org.
