This is how Joanna Fang describes herself: “I am an Emmy-award winning Foley artist, an avid guitar collector, a Taiwanese American, and also transgender.”
In the years she spent “struggling with my body,” she focused on her work as a Foley artist, the person who creates everyday sounds effects for television and movies. To create the sounds of footsteps, she literally walks in somebody else’s shoes.
“Your body disappears and for those moments you become the sound, you become the character,” she says. “For those moments I didn’t have to be in the world of the living. I was in the world of the film.”
For Pride Month, WeWork video lead Zachary Fuhrer captured Fang’s story for a series of short documentaries called Always Love. Fang talks about her journey, ending up at the New York City Pride March. The series was directed by Brenna Perez.
I like to think that somewhere out there will be some other closeted person,” says Fang. “Maybe they’ll see me walking the parade and say, ‘If she can do it, I can do it.’”
