WeWork this week opens its first location in Costa Mesa, doubling its presence in an area that’s known as the “Silicon Valley of Southern California.”
WeWork 3200 Park Center Drive is the company’s second location in Orange County, the region’s burgeoning tech hub. WeWork Spectrum Center, which opened in 2016, is about 10 miles east in Irvine.
The opening of WeWork 3200 Park Center Drive brings the total number of cities around the world with a WeWork location to 73. Since the beginning of the year, WeWork has expanded to eight new cities in four new countries.
Along with Costa Mesa, WeWork is opening seven other new buildings this month, two in New York and one each in Bangalore, London, Manchester, Mumbai, and Seoul.
In addition, WeWork is expanding its space in 13 existing buildings across Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America.
In a beautiful green glass tower, WeWork 3200 Park Center Drive has sweeping views through floor-to-ceiling windows on two floors. You can often see Santa Catalina Island to the southwest and the Santa Ana Mountains to the east. The famous California Scenario sculpture garden created by artist Isamu Noguchi is just outside.
For the interiors, the design team chose natural materials like white oak panels and cognac-colored leather. The artwork is influenced by the proximity of the coastline, with waves incorporated into custom-designed runs and a neon sculpture.
Perhaps the boldest design element is a 30-foot mural by local artist Maxwell McMaster. The young painter is known for abstract designs inspired by the area’s natural beauty.
In the Indian metropolis of Mumbai, WeWork Vikhroli West occupies three floors of a modern complex. Designers retained the existing concrete floors, which softly reflect the abundant sunlight. They also incorporated terrazzo tiles, which evoke the feeling of Old Bombay.
Besides a lounge area with a double-height ceiling, the space has three sprawling outdoor terraces, one on the 12th floor and two on the 13th floor. One of these is being transformed into a dedicated wellness space.
The new Bangalore location, called WeWork Hebbal, has a central stairway that connects all three floors. It’s made of terracotta bricks that let sun shine through, creating intricate patterns of light and shadows that change throughout the day.
