The Challenge: remote work’s impact on creativity and collaboration

While remote work was initially seen as a necessary move, it quickly became apparent that the absence of a physical office space was affecting the creative energy and cohesion of the team. For a design studio like Franklyn, face-to-face interactions and a collaborative environment were crucial to keeping the creative juices flowing.
Patrick Richardson Executive Director, Co-Founder at Franklyn noted, “We were really missing the camaraderie, the spontaneous ideas, and the ability to quickly collaborate. ” Despite the difficulties, Franklyn was hesitant to return to the traditional office model as their previous experience with office space management had been challenging. Franklyn wanted a solution that would offer flexibility without the burden of managing the day-to-day operations and logistics of their office.

The Solution: adapt a hybrid work model with a central office location
Transitioning to a hybrid model in the summer of 2021, the design studio joined WeWork at Dock 72 in Brooklyn, New York, gaining the freedom to choose when and where to work, while still offering a space to meet in person when needed.
WeWork’s dynamic spaces and designs—from desks to meeting rooms and communal lounges—enabled Franklyn’s team to find the right environment for their needs on any given day and the convenience of the office’s central location provided Franklyn’s team the ability to balance work and personal life. Richardson, reflecting on the decision, shared, “After joining WeWork, the work and stress associated with having an office was virtually gone.”
WeWork’s dynamic designs allowed Franklyn’s creative teams to collaborate easily. The ability to quickly grab someone to work through an idea in person, instead of relying on virtual meetings, revitalized Franklyn’s collaborative process.
WeWork’s commitment to its members added an unexpected, but much-welcomed, layer of value for Franklyn. Creative Director, Elisa Maezono, shared a memorable experience with WeWork’s community team. “They arrived with a custom green door stopper laser cut with the word ‘Franklyn.’ It’s exactly the kind of thoughtful consideration that encapsulates our experience at WeWork.”

Results: revitalized creativity and team culture
The team reported significant improvements in their ability to share ideas quickly, something that had been much harder to replicate through remote meetings. Franklyn also tapped into WeWork’s community at Dock 72, according to Maezono, “To keep your reservoir of creative material flowing, It’s important to have experiences outside of work, like WeWork’s networking events.”
By providing a space that adapts to Franklyn’s creative needs and hybrid model, WeWork empowered the studio to continue producing exceptional work for clients, all while maintaining the playful and innovative spirit that makes Franklyn unique.
