When South Korea native Ohyoon Kwon was attending grad school in the Netherlands, he became fascinated with how people make connections.
“As a foreigner, it’s interesting to meet people of different backgrounds, cultures, and history,” Kwon says. “I was personally interested in how people get to know each other.”
This desire led him to London, where he did his master’s thesis on how nonprofit organizations could help homeless people feel more integrated into the community through text messaging. That way, they’d have information about service and support at their fingertips.
“This project allowed me to open up and develop the ability to talk to and understand people in completely different situations,” Kwon says. “I grew a passion for psychology and entrepreneurship.”
Last year, Kwon and Indian-born Harikishore Sreenivasalu created WeQu, a card game to help people get to know each other. It’s designed for everyone: co-workers, friends, and even romantic partners.
The game can be synced with an app, which helps you keep track of your score and understand aspects of your personality.
To help expand its offerings, WeQu recently launched a Kickstarter campaign with a target goal of $7,916. You have through June 16 to join in.
“WeQu wants to become part of the everyday lingo, like how people use the words ‘IQ’ and ‘EQ,’”says Kwon, who works out of WeWork Metropool. “We want our card game to be a reference point for people when they look for romance, get to know family and friends better, and find potential business partners.”
