Red Nose Day uses comic relief to raise awareness about child poverty

Meagan Kirkpatrick wasn’t seeing things. That really was a giant red nose she saw on her way to work the other morning.

It was one of the many ways people are raising awareness about Red Nose Day, which is working to end child poverty. On Thursday, May 25, there will be thousands of other noses—most of them normal sized—in schools, offices, and homes around the country. The day culminates with The Red Nose Day Special on NBC.

Kirkpatrick, the organization’s vice president of marketing, got involved in Red Nose Day about six weeks ago, just as the organization shifted into high gear for its annual campaign.

“We’re in the thick of it right now,” she said earlier this week. “It’s very fast, but also very exciting. You have to put everything you have on the table.”

Based at WeWork 27 E 28th St in New York City, the organization hopes to best its fundraising record of $36 million from last year. It’s getting a boost from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is matching every Facebook campaign donation dollar for dollar.
