The next time you use your smartphone to call a car, there might be nobody behind the wheel. Google is planning to use its self-driving cars as part of a new ride-hailing service that will go head-to-head with Uber.
Bloomberg reports that Google’s driverless cars have been tested mostly around San Francisco and Austin. These might become the first cities to benefit from the ride-hailing service, according to a source within Google who emphasized that the “plans are private.” The fleets could be used on college campuses, corporate office parks, or military bases, according to Bloomberg.
Uber has been exploring self-driving technology since February. This could spark competition between the two high-tech Goliaths: the ridesharing giant versus the Internet giant.
