Nighttime routines that will help you power through your day

When it comes to productivity and entrepreneurs, the world is obsessed with morning routines. This is certainly understandable—how you begin your day often sets the tone for how successful your day will be.

But what about nighttime routines?

It can be argued that while a good morning routine can set your day up for massive productivity, a good nighttime routine can set your morning up for an amazing day ahead.

1. Review your day and ask yourself some questions

This first tip comes to us from Benjamin Franklin, who is known for—among many things—his highly detailed daily schedule that relied on a strict adherence to routine. At the end of each day, he would ask himself, “What good did I do today?” This is a wonderful question because it places you in a positive mindset right away. Also, it reminds us that even after a difficult day where perhaps a few things didn’t go well, there is always at least one good thing that we did that we can point to. Other questions you might also want to ask yourself: What am I grateful for? What steps did I take toward realizing my larger goals today? What could I have done better?

2. Establish three priorities for the next day

Go over your schedule for the next day, taking note of any appointments, meetings, and deadlines you have. Also go over any long-term goals that you have. Determine what the next step is that you need to take to make progress. Can you add that step to your list of three priorities? Setting your priorities will keep you from having to worry about the next day while you’re trying to sleep. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll have a clear picture of what you want to focus on for that day.

3. Keep strict boundaries

It is very easy to fall into this routine when you are an entrepreneur: bringing work home and allowing it to seep into your evenings and personal life. Of course your family and friends would appreciate it if you would put your work aside in the evenings so you can spend time with them, but you should consider placing clear boundaries on your workday so you can have adequate time to decompress.

4. Set a sleep schedule

Good sleep is essential to our health and productivity, so by prioritizing your sleep health, you can overcome any sleeping problems you’re having. To start, you want to set a sleep schedule (and then stick to it). Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day will help regulate your sleep patterns. Ensure that your bedroom is darkened and cool—this encourages the brain to release melatonin which helps induce sleep.

5. Plan an activity that brings you joy

Every evening, you should do something that you enjoy. Whether that’s a special hobby, or laughing with family over a lovely meal, or taking a stroll after dinner. Anything that helps you disconnect from work and find something to smile about.

6. Kick back and read

Keeping up with all of the books on your reading list can be difficult. If you make it a habit to set aside a few minutes every night to devote to reading, you’ll be enriching your life while you relax from your day. Reading is a proven stress reducer, which makes it the perfect nighttime activity.
