Slack by the numbers
- 143 employees
- 1 full-floor custom build-out
- 1-year lease with option to extend
- 4 weeks from deal signed to move-in
When it comes to workplace design, Slack draws inspiration from their communication platform. They seek to create spaces that facilitate productivity, collaboration, and community—a place where employees can do their best work.
Slack’s New York office started out as a humble two-person sales team. They set up shop in a WeWork coworking location, but in less than three years, the New York team grew to nearly 100 employees. It was time for more space.
Slack humanizes work culture by breaking down silos in a digital sense, and WeWork does the same thing, in a more physical way.
In collaboration with their broker, WeWork and Slack built a custom, 15,231 square foot private floor complete with a lounge, pantry, board room, and conference rooms—all with Slack’s branding. And compared to other custom build-out options they were exploring, WeWork delivered for the client in record time—only four weeks from deal signed to move in.
Slack is a fast-growing company, and “Expenditures on capital expenses is a dollar we didn’t spend on R&D, marketing, or headcount,” says Deano Roberts, Slack’s VP of Global Workplace. Thanks to WeWork’s creative deal structures, Slack was able to free up capital to reinvest in their most important asset: their people.
